The reason we bought the house

Front view “How come you bought this wreck of a house?”

is a question which was asked to me more than once. And I must agree, I asked myself this question frequently, especially during the restoration works of the existing house.

The house actually came on my path. My parents own a piece of land with a large shed, which is used for hobby purposes. This piece of land is situated about 800m away from the house where I grew up. During my youth I spent a lot of my time in the shed getting my hands dirty while working with wood and metal. Neighboring this piece of land there is a small house where an old lady used to live. We always had good contact with her and helped her maintaining her garden.

One day we received the news that the old lady had passed away. At that time I was living in a small apartment in the city of Schiedam (near Rotterdam) and was considering the idea of moving back to where I grew up. The opportunity of buying a house situated adjacent to the large shed where I spent so much of my free-time made me enthusiastic. With this mindset I contacted the family of our old neighbor, to find out what the plans were for the house. Long story short, after a couple of weeks I was signing the purchasing contract for the house!

And this was the start of a huge project, I only didn’t realize how big it would get!

Rear of the house
