Get them rolling!

As it happens on all our quests, we found these balls unexpectedly in Soumoulou (France). Hubert instantly fell in love. We were leaving without them, but seeing his sad face made us turn around and get them. They were very dirty and infested with termites; however we thought they could give a nice look to any corner of the house.

The treatment was simple:

1) First we brushed them to remove the spider webs and the dust.

2) Then we removed the dust inside the termites holes by applying high pressure air.

3) Afterwards we washed them with warm water and soap to remove the dirt and the oil. This made the balls recover their original pale color.

4) Once they were dry we applied anti-termite treatment generously to get rid of the termites inside and prevent new from nesting.

5) One of the balls required a little bit of gluing because some pieces were coming loose due to the action of the termites. In order to apply pressure on the loose pieces while the glue was drying, we put some masking tape.

6) When the glue was dry we removed the masking tape and sanded the balls. First with coarse sanding paper and then with a finer one to leave a smooth surface.

7) After removing all the dust created while sanding, we applied wood oil to protect the balls and let it absorb. After a couple of days we removed the excess of oil with a cloth and the balls were ready to decorate any corner!

¡Qué rueden!

Como pasa en todas nuestras expediciones, encontramos estas bolas para jugar a los bolos inesperadamente en Soumoulou (Francia). Hubert se enamoró de ellas al instante. Al irnos sin las bolas, la cara de Hubert estaba tan triste, que decidimos volver para llevárnoslas. Estaban sucias y llenas de terminas, pero pensamos que quedarían bien en cualquier rincón de la casa.

El tratamiento fue simple:

1) Cepillamos las bolas para eliminar las telas de araña y el polvo.

2) Después, con aire comprimido, eliminamos el polvo que se encontraba en los agujeros hechos por las termitas.

3) A continuación las lavamos con agua caliente y jabón para quitar la mugre y el aceite. Una vez lavadas, las bolas recuperaron su color claro natural.

4) Una vez secas aplicamos tratamiento anti-termitas para acabar con las que se encontraban dentro y prevenir que nuevas anidaran.

5) Una de las bolas requería pegamento ya que algunas partes se encontraban sueltas debido a la acción de las termitas. Para poder ejercer presión mientras el pegamento se secaba, pegamos cinta de carpintero.

6) Cuando el pegamento había secado, retiramos la cinta de carpintero y lijamos las bolas. Primero con una lija de grano grueso y posteriormente con una de grano más fino para pulirlas.

7) Una vez retirado el polvillo que se había creado a la hora de lijar, aplicamos aceite para madera para proteger las bolas y lo dejamos absorber. Un par de días más tarde, retiramos el exceso de aceite con un paño y las bolas estaban listas para embellecer cualquier rincón de la casa.
