The big project

Following the designer series that we began with Piet Hein Eek, here we have a new chapter about which we are tremendously excited: Axel Vervoordt. We got to know him on autumn 2014, when we first visited the headquarters at Kanaal (Wijnegem, Belgium) during one of his winter exhibitions.

In autumn of 2015 we returned to see this enormous project in real life again.

Who is Axel Vervoordt?

Axel Vervoordt is a world famous antiquarian, interior designer and art trader from Belgium. Born in 1947 in Antwerp, Axel Vervoordt started at an age of 14  purchasing antiques at an auction in England supported by a loan of his father. During this period he developed his interest in antiques. While his study in economics and also while serving in the army, Axel continued purchasing and selling antiques. At age 21, after selling one of his purchased paintings with high profit, Axel concluded he would make his hobby his life’s work.

After establishing his house and showroom in one of the houses in the Vlaeykensgang in Antwerp, Axel got requests to deliver full interiors to his customers. Soon he was not only proving antiques but also started designing furniture for these interiors.

In the 1970’s Axel started purchasing antiques in Thailand, Cambodia and Japan. During these trips he developed his own style: a combination of the rustic style with Baroque furniture and eastern objects.

After outgrowing his workshop and warehouses in the Vlaeykensgang, Vervoordt purchased ‘s Gravenwezel, a castle with 50 rooms. After years of renovation Vervoordt was able to display a wide variety of objects during yearly exhibitions that were open to public.

The real estate project

Besides trading in high-end antiques Axel Vervoordt is also active in real estate projects. The Kanaal project is by far the biggest and most ambitious. The project is designed around a former distillery and malting complex in Wijnegem, Belgium. This 50.000m2 [about 60.000 square yards] project consists of several buildings which include luxury apartments, businesses, art galleries and the headquarters. It truly is a city within a city.

The complex consists of several free standing buildings, each with their own character and style. The five buildings that are the most spectacular are the Cubes, the Escher building, the Waterhuis (water house), Pakhuizen (the warehouses) and last but definitely not least, the Silos.

Silos

A the name indicates, the Silos are formed out of six silos combined with a new building complex. The combination of the round lines of the silos and the minimalist lines of the other building completes the building. This makes it very interesting to look at from the outside.

The top part of the silos is divided into apartments. The largest apartments consist of one ¨slice¨ of the entire building. Because all the silos and rectangular building are connected to each other by means of bridges, the apartments have an aggregated surface of 410m2 [4413 feet square] with breath taking views and exciting round rooms. The building is divided in in such a way that there is a range of apartment sizes, varying from big to really big.

Escher Building

Next to the silos the Escher building is situated. This former malt-house has a strong industrial look. The lower part of the building maintains the original brick construction. To create more living space a modern steel structure is added to the top of the building. Another really cool architectural feature are the round openings inside the building which used to accommodate the old malt boilers. This makes for an interesting combination between old and new.

Waterhuis

The Waterhuis is a new building which is placed next to the Escher building. The ground floor of this building houses a bakery and shop, the rest of it is divided into apartments.  The black exterior structure, in combination with the wooden facade and glass handrails, gives the building a real modern industrial look. This makes it a perfect view for the neighbors at the Pakhuizen (warehouses).

Pakhuizen

The Pakhuizen are located along the Stokerijstraat and form a real architectural skyline together with their neighboring Waterhuis, Escher building and the Silos. The lower parts of the Pakhuizen are formed out of restored brick work. The arch shaped windows give the facade a real character. Just like the Escher building, modern steel structures are placed on top of the buildings to create more floor area.

Cubes

In the center of the Kanaal site, surrounded by the courtyards, are four new apartment buildings, the Cubes. These modern white buildings make a beautiful contrast with the industrial buildings located on the other side of the courtyard. The facade, which seems to have randomly placed windows, makes it hard to determine the inner layout of the building. Some of these windows really stand out from the rest because of their enormous dimensions. The five meter high harmonic windows give the apartments plenty of light inside as well as provide spectacular views.

Surrounding the Cubes are several additional buildings which house workshops, office buildings, artist galleries and other facilities.

Our impressions

On 2014, when we first heard about this project, we could not imagine all these buildings, each with its own character coming together. The project was completely unprecedented from everything that we knew: not only for the magnitude but also for the different styles and techniques applied. Because of this, we simply could not wait to autumn 2015 to see the progress and enter the different buildings.

The first thing that came to mind when we finally got there, was probably that the place seemed to be taken from a movie studio. The industrial buildings next to the more modern ones, the impressive height of the silos, the neatly designed gardens and the peaceful atmosphere… It is indeed a place anybody would love to live in.

We also had the chance to enter a silo apartment as well as some other apartments at the other buildings which were open to the public. Here we had some mixed feelings. Being such big fans of the Wabi-sabi style of Axel, I guess we were expecting a little bit more of it on the interior design of these apartments. The apartments were neatly decorated including some antique pieces; however we missed the serene spheres that we were used to.

On the other hand, having spent so much time and effort designing our own house and having considered so many different layouts for the house, I personally felt a little disappointed about some of the decisions that the architects of these houses had made; mainly in terms of space usage and dimensions of certain rooms which to our opinion fell into the narrow side.

All in all, the were amazed by the incredible work performed by Axel Vervoordt and his team and we cant wait of the autumn 2016 tour!

El gran proyecto

Continuando con la serie de diseñadores que comenzamos con Piet Hein Eek, aquí tenemos otro capítulo sobre el cual estamos entusiasmados: Axel Vervoordt. Lo conocimos en otoño de 2014 cuando visitamos por primera vez la sede en Kanaal (Wijnegem, Bélgica) durante una de sus exposiciones de invierno.

En otoño de 2015 volvimos para comprobar el progreso de semejante proyecto.

¿Quién es Axel Vervoordt?

Axel Vervoordt es un reconocido restaurador, diseñador de interiores y comerciante de arte belga. Nació en Amberes en 1947. A los 14 años compró su primera antigüedad en una subasta en Inglaterra gracias a un préstamo que le había concedido su padre. A lo largo de esta etapa desarrolló su interés por este gremio. Al tiempo que cursaba sus estudios de económicas y durante el servicio militar, Axel continuó la compra-venta de antigüedades. A los 21, tras vender un cuadro con un alto beneficio, decidió que convertiría su hobby en su profesión.

Tras establecer su casa y su galería en Vlaeykensgang (Amberes), Axel recibió varias peticiones para diseñar interiores para sus clientes. Pronto pasaría de entregar antigüedades a diseñar también los muebles que acompañarían dichos interiores.

Durante la década de los 70, Axel comenzó a comprar antigüedades en Tailandia, Camboya y Japón. Durante el transcurso de estos viajes, Axel desarrolló un estilo que combinaría el estilo rústico incluyendo muebles barrocos y objetos orientales.

Debido a la exitosa carrera de Axel, el estudio y la galería de Vlaeykensgang se quedaron pequeños y fue entonces cuando decidió comprar al famoso castillo de ´s Gravenwezel, el cual se convirtiría parte de su marca. Después de varios años de restauración, Axel pudo al fin mostrar una gran variedad de objetos durante las exposiciones anuales abiertas al público.

Su proyecto inmobiliario

Además de en el comercio de antigüedades de lujo, Axel Vervoordt trabaja en varios proyectos inmobiliarios. Entre ellos, el mayor y más ambicioso es sin duda el de Kanaal. El proyecto está diseñado alrededor de una antigua destilería de malta en Wijnegem, Bélgica. Este proyecto abarca 50.000m2 de terreno en los cuales se encuentran varios edificios que darán cabida a apartamentos de lujo, oficinas, galerías de arte y la nueva sede de Axel Vervoordt. Este proyecto es verdaderamente una pequeña ciudad en sí misma.

El complejo inmobiliario está formado por varios inmuebles independientes unos de otros, cada cual con su propio estilo y carácter. Los edificios principales son: los cubos, el edificio Escher, el Waterhuis, los Pakhuizen y los silos.

Los silos

Como bien indica el nombre, este edificio consiste en 6 silos al que le han sumado uno adicional. El conjunto arquitectónico crea una atractiva visión formada por las curvas de los silos y el estilo minimalista de la adición.

La parte superior de los silos está dividida en apartamentos. Los apartamentos más grandes constan de una ¨rebanada¨ completa de todo el conjunto de edificios. Cada rebanada de los silos y de la nueva edificación se conectan entre sí mediante puentes formando una superficie agregada de 410m2. Dichos apartamentos se sitúan junto a las compuertas del canal, lo cual crea unas vistas extraordinarias desde los apartamentos. Las plantas inferiores se dividen en 2 apartamentos cada una con una distribución similar a la de los apartamentos mayores.

El edificio Escher

Al lado de los silos se encuentra el inconfundible edificio Escher, el cual debe su estilo industrial a la antigua cervecería. La sección inferior del edificio conserva el ladrillo cara vista original. La sección superior está formada por una construcción de acero que posibilita la creación de nuevos apartamentos. Esta combinación entre lo nuevo y lo viejo es sin duda un deleite para aquellos amantes del estilo industrial. Otra de las características especiales de este edificio son las aperturas redondeadas dentro del mismo donde se situaban las calderas de la cervecería.

Waterhuis

El Waterhuis es un edificio nuevo que se sitúa al lado del edificio Escher. La planta baja de dicho edificio alberga una panadería y una tienda. El resto está dividido en apartamentos. La estructura exterior de esta edificación es de color negro lo cual proporciona un bello contraste con la fachada de madera y las barandas de cristal. Una vez más, Axel nos deleita con una imagen espectacular la cual disfrutarán, sin lugar a duda, los vecinos de las Pakhuizen (almacenes).

Pakhuizen

Las Pakhuizen están situadas a lo largo de la calle Stokerijstraat y forman una hipnotizadora silueta junto con el Waterhuis y el edificio Escher adyacentes. Las Pakhuizen tienen el mismo estilo que el edificio Escher; es decir, la parte inferior mantiene la estructura original de ladrillo cara vista y la parte superior esta reforzada mediante una estructura de acero. Los ventanales en forma de arco proporcionan un carácter especial al edificio.

Los cubos

En el centro del recinto de Kanaal, dispersos en el patio, se encuentran los 4 cubos. Estos edificios son completamente nuevos y todos ellos están dedicados a ser apartamentos. Esto modernos edificios blancos contrastan con los edificios industriales que los rodean. A través de la fachada, donde las ventanas parecen dispuestas aleatoriamente, es difícil de imaginar la distribución interior del edificio. Algunas de las ventanas resaltan enormemente debido a su gran tamaño. Estos ventanales de más de 5m de alto con apertura armónica proporcionan no solo luz sino también unas vistas increíbles de todo el recinto de Kanaal.

Alrededor de los cubos se encuentra unos edificios más pequeños entre los cuales se incluyen talleres, oficinas, galerías de arte y otras instalaciones.

Nuestra impresión

En 2014, cuando oímos por primeras vez sobre el proyecto inmobiliario de Axel Vervoordt, simplemente no nos podíamos imaginar todos estos edificios, cada uno con su carácter exclusivo, formando un conjunto. Era un proyecto sin precedentes: no solo por la magnitud del mismo sino también por los diferentes estilos y técnicas empleadas. Por ello, esperamos ansiosamente al otoño de 2015 para ver el progreso y poder entrar en los edificios.

Lo primero que se nos vino a la cabeza cuando llegamos probablemente fue que el recinto parecía haber sido sacado de los estudios de una película: los edificios de estilo industrial al lado de otros más modernos, la vertiginosa altura de los silos, los patios esmeradamente diseñados y la tranquilidad que se respiraba… Era sin duda un lugar en el que a cualquiera le gustaría vivir.

También tuvimos la oportunidad de entrar en algunos apartamentos de los silos y de los otros edificios, los cuales estaban abiertos al público. Fue aquí donde tuvimos sentimientos contrariados. Siendo tan grandes admiradores del estilo Wabi-sabi de Axel, esperábamos ver más de ello en el interior de los apartamentos. Los apartamentos estaban cuidadosamente decorados incluyendo algunas antigüedades; sin embargo echamos de menos el ambiente sereno al que Axel nos tenía acostumbrados.

Por otra parte, habiendo dedicado tanto tiempo y esfuerzo al diseño de nuestra propia casa y habiendo cosiderado tantas disposiciones generales, me sentí algo decepcionada sobre algunas de las decisiones que los arquitectos habían tomado; entre otras el uso efectivo del espacio y las dimensiones de algunas estancias que en ocasiones tiraban a ser pequeñas.

En cualquier caso, el espectacular trabajo de Axel y su equipo nos dejó boquiabiertos y esperamos ansiosos el día de puertas abiertas de 2016.
